Using AAS can stop the body from making its own sex hormones. Normally, a system called the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian axis controls the reproductive system in women, including the menstrual cycle and hormone levels. The hypothalamus and pituitary are parts of the brain that send hormone signals (LH and FSH) to the ovaries. These signals help the ovaries make estrogen (the female sex hormone), control the menstrual cycle, and release eggs. If this system is disrupted, like with the use of AAS, it can stop the brain’s signals and prevent the body from making its own sex hormones. In men, this can cause low testosterone, which usually lasts for months but has been known to last for years. We don’t have much information on how long this might last in women, and we want to learn more through our study.
