Anabolic Steroid-Induced Hypogonadism (ASIH)
The use of androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS) in men can lead to anabolic steroid-induced hypogonadism (ASIH), a condition where the testicles lose the ability to produce testosterone. ASIH can persist for months or even years and is associated with a range of distressing symptoms, including erectile dysfunction, reduced libido, infertility, and significant psychiatric effects such as depression and suicidal thoughts. These symptoms are often severe enough to drive individuals back to steroid use. Currently, there is no established treatment for managing ASIH.
Our research group at Imperial College London is investigating the experiences of men who have recently ceased AAS use.
We are also investigating the experiences of men with symptoms of low testosterone without prior steroid use, please contact us using the form below if you would like to hear more about our studies and how to take part.
